ProCo Sound and the RAT Circuit
ProCo Sound, founded in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1974, developed the RAT distortion circuit in 1978 as a rugged, high-gain alternative to existing fuzz and overdrive pedals.
Rackmount Evolution
The R2DU model appeared in the late 1980s as a 19-inch, two-space rack unit housing the RAT topology with balanced I/O and internal power regulation for permanent installation in touring and studio racks.
Notable Users
Artists including David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, and members of bands such as The Cult and Soundgarden have relied on RAT-based distortion for signature aggressive tones across recordings and tours.
