Les Claypool of Primus turned the bass into a lead instrument with percussive slapping, tapping and oddball textures. He is best known for his Carl Thompson basses, including the multi-wood Rainbow fretless, which he ran through a Mesa/Boogie Bass 400+ head in the classic late-1980s through 1990s era.
He is reported to have recorded the 1997 Brown Album with a small Gallien-Krueger MB150S combo. In later years he moved to his own Pachyderm basses and the Whamola, with an NS Design electric upright for arco playing. Recent pedalboards have included Line 6 DL4 and DM4 modelers, a Boomerang looper and a Fractal AX8, with Mesa Subway D-800 heads. Exact setups change from tour to tour.
