John Frusciante Rig

John Frusciante is the guitarist of Red Hot Chili Peppers, whose playing mixes Hendrix-style Strat phrasing, funk rhythm, and raw emotion over Flea's bass. The sound most people picture is Californication through Stadium Arcadium: a 1962 sunburst Fender Stratocaster into a dual-Marshall rig — a 200W Marshall Major for clean punch and a Silver Jubilee 2555 for crunch — with a Boss CE-1 Chorus Ensemble splitting the signal to both amps. Distortion is the orange Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion, and the Ibanez WH-10 is the wah he has used since joining the band. A Gretsch White Falcon supplied the hollow-body riff on the title track Californication and on Otherside.

He left the Peppers in 2009 and spent the 2010s on Yamaha SG2000s (a purple 1980 is his favorite) for solo records such as Enclosure, deliberately changing how he bent and used vibrato. After rejoining in 2019 he returned to the '62 Strat; Fender's 2024 Custom Shop Limited Edition Masterbuilt John Frusciante Stratocaster is a $20,000 replica of that guitar with Abigail Ybarra pickups and an Ilitch hum-canceling system. Live he still runs Marshalls (Jubilee, Major, and a JMP 2204) with an expanded MXR-heavy board: two DS-2s, Super Badass Variac Fuzz, Dyna Comp, and MXR M300 reverbs.
