Rock Red Hot Chili Peppers Flea

Flea (Michael Peter Balzary) has been the Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist since 1983, mixing slap-funk, punk attack, and later melodic counterpoint. Through the late 1980s he toured Music Man StingRay basses and recorded Freaky Styley on one; in the studio for The Uplift Mofo Party Plan and Mother's Milk he used a Spector NS-2. Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) was tracked mostly on a translucent-blue Wal Mk II — a Music Man StingRay 5 only on a couple of songs — into Gallien-Krueger 800RB heads.

From Californication (1999) through the I'm With You and 2013–14 tours he lived on graphite-neck Modulus Flea Basses (Lane Poor pickup, Aguilar OBP-1, Badass bridge) into three Gallien-Krueger 2001RB heads and 410RBH/115 cabinets, with a Boss ODB-3 grinding “Around the World” and an Electro-Harmonix Q-Tron on “Sir Psycho Sexy.” Since Stadium Arcadium he has recorded on a 1961 Shell Pink Fender Jazz Bass, and after Modulus his stage instruments are Custom Shop Jazzes — the same circuit as the 2018 Flea Signature Active Jazz Bass. On Unlimited Love and the 2022–24 tours he swapped the long-running GK stack for Ampeg SVTs; the Fender Flea Jazz Bass in Road Worn Shell Pink is the signature still in production.

What they tour or record with now, or the newest signature line.

Bass
Fender Custom Shop 1961 Jazz Bass RW HREL SFASHP
Current studio 2006–present: the faded Shell Pink '61 Jazz, a fan gift, is the primary recording bass from Stadium Arcadium through The Getaway, Unlimited Love, and Atoms for Peace — the 'old wood sound' he keeps going back to.
Bass
Fender Flea Artist Series Signature Active Jazz Bass 2018 - Satin Inca Silver
Current signature (2016–present): Road Worn Shell Pink recreation of the '61 studio Jazz, with vintage-spec pickups and a nitro finish. The Fender signature still in production; not the discontinued Active model.
Bass
2018 Fender Flea Signature Active Jazz Bass Satin Shell Pink 4-String
Current live 2016–present: Custom Shop Jazzes with a Lane Poor-style humbucker and Aguilar OBP-1 replaced Modulus on stage. Fender issued this circuit as the Flea Signature Active Jazz Bass (Inca Silver / Shell Pink, 2018–2020); he still tours Custom Shop versions.
Amp
Ampeg USA SVT II SVT-2 Pro Tube Bass Amp 1995 Blue/Red Will Ship
Current 2022–present: Flea told Bass Player he left Gallien-Krueger for Ampeg SVTs on Unlimited Love and took the SVTs on the 2022–24 world tour — the first full amp-brand change in decades.
