Eddie Van Halen's sound is the "brown sound": high-gain crunch, two-handed tapping, and a bright, compressed attack from a hot-rodded Strat-style guitar into a modified Marshall Super Lead. The Frankenstrat and those early Plexi-era heads are what most people hear on Van Halen I through the mid-80s records — and they are also the pieces that are hardest (and most expensive) to copy literally.
He did not stay on that rig. In the early 1990s he designed the Peavey 5150, then later launched the EVH brand with Fender: Wolfgang guitars and the 5150 III amp line that carried his last tours.
