The 1999 Gibson Nighthawk Standard ST-3 in Vintage Sunburst comes from the final year of the original Nighthawk run and represents one of Gibson’s most adventurous designs of the 1990s.
At its core it is unmistakably Gibson, with a mahogany body, figured maple top, set mahogany neck and bound rosewood fingerboard with parallelogram inlays . But the Nighthawk was designed to go far beyond the traditional Les Paul formula. Its slimmer, more ergonomic body, string-through bridge and unusual pickup layout make it lighter, more versatile and noticeably different in feel from Gibson’s more conventional models.
The ST-3 is the particularly versatile three-pickup version, combining a mini-humbucker in the neck, NSX single coil in the middle and distinctive slanted M-Series humbucker in the bridge . Together with its five-way selector and push/pull switching, the guitar offers an unusually broad range of sounds, moving convincingly between warm Gibson-style humbucker tones and brighter, more articulate single-coil territory.
Finished in classic Vintage Sunburst , the figured maple top gives the guitar a more traditional Gibson appearance despite the decidedly unconventional design underneath.
With the original Nighthawk series discontinued in 1999 , this example comes from the very end of its first production era. An excellent choice for the player or collector looking for a genuinely different Gibson: distinctive, highly versatile and one of the more interesting cult models to emerge from the company during the 1990s
