Boss and the Evolution of Pitch Effects
Boss, a Roland subsidiary since 1973, introduced its first pitch shifter, the PS-2, in 1987. Subsequent models like the PS-5 and PS-6 refined tracking and added intelligent harmonizing before the XS-100 arrived as a streamlined polyphonic option focused solely on precise shifting.
Development of the XS-100
Released in 2022, the XS-100 uses updated DSP to handle complex chords at speeds under 5 ms. It retains the rugged Boss enclosure and 9-volt center-negative power standard while dropping the harmonist functions of prior units to target players needing only transposition.
Notable Users
Guitarists such as Nels Cline and experimental players in the math-rock scene have integrated the XS-100 into pedalboards for real-time octave doubling and detuning without additional processing.
