Welagen custom built Vibroverb
Hand built from ground up by Jelle Welagen, who often builds highly acclaimed Dumble clones, but branches out an has done tweeds, Trainwrecks and other things.
40 watts
1 - 15” JBL E130-8 (legendary vintage speaker, very hard to find) also often used by SRV in his Vibroverbs
Dual 6L6
Has 5U4GB rectifier tube, you can also play with different rectifier tubes for a different feel in the power section, or put a diode rectifier in for the stiffest/quickest feel which is what SrV sometime did.
This is another Welagen masterpiece, far better than any reissue and it’s not even close, in their hardwired custom shop reissues fender still ends up doing some odds things and strange corner cuts to the circuits.
This amp is based on the exact circuit of a vintage blackface Vibroverb, but with the mods typically done by Cesar Diaz for SRV’s amps. Including disarming the trem circuit, a master volume where the “intensity“ knob is, allowing you to dime the volume switch to get breakup at lower volumes. This amp is also very sensitive to different tubes, so is worth trying old RCA, GE’s etc.. to see what you like best.
Both normal and vibrato channels operate, you can pull the tube in V1 position though and get more drive when using the vibrato channels. Starts to breakup around 4-5 on volume a then set master to taste, I typically just use it with the master all the way up and vibrato channel volume somewhere between 4-6ish
Works perfect, sounds great, excellent condition. Reverb also sounds superb, and certainly does the SRV thing, there a TS type pedal, or better yet a kingtone pedal like a duelist, or blues power in front of it and its pure SRV land. Whether or not anyone can play like that is the other part of the trick though…
I have a huge collection of amps, and a studio, I own an all original vintage 64’ Vibroverb with an E-130 for a long time, I bought this amp to keep in another location but now I have all my gear at the same spot, so having this as well is a little redundant. That being said, they sound very similar, this amp can breakup a little quicker and sooner, and is more reliable and dead quiet but by 64’ has a lot of sentimental value as I’ve got a long history with it so I will let this one go.
