About This Listing

The Roland SPV-355 is a vintage analog monophonic pitch-to-voltage (P/V) synthesizer and rack-mount expander manufactured by Roland from 1979 to 1984. Housed in a 2U 19-inch steel rack enclosure, it was designed to convert incoming audio signals (such as electric guitars, wind instruments, or vocals) into control voltages (CV) and gate triggers.

Key Features

• Sound Sources: Dual monophonic voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) with three selectable waveforms (sawtooth, square, and pulse) across 4', 8', and 16' ranges, plus a square-wave sub-oscillator and a direct audio input blend.

• Oscillator Control: VCO2 features a footswitch-controlled A/B offset tuning function allowing shift changes of up to an octave.

• Filter & Envelope: A 24dB/octave self-oscillating low-pass voltage-controlled filter (VCF) and an Attack-Decay-Sustain (ADS) envelope generator (lacking a release stage).

• Envelope Follower: Built-in envelope follower and VCA for tracking dynamic nuances from the input signal.

• CV/Gate I/O: Standard 1V/octave CV and gate inputs/outputs, allowing it to function as a standalone analog synth module, a CV/gate converter, or an external processor.

Performance & Limitations

• Tracking: Pitch-tracking is best with clean monophonic signals, vocals, or brass; guitar tracking can be unpredictable or latent.

• Missing Features: LFO, white noise generator, and sample-and-hold are absent.

• Known Quirks: Prone to pitch-hold drift during sustained CV/gate holds.
