Built to Order G&L S-500 in Sonic Blue, made in Fullerton, CA. Only lightly played in home.
This is one of the best guitars I’ve owned but it’s time to let it go to a home where it will be used more. It has had a single owner and been in a smoke free house.
Leo Fender famously said that G&L guitars were the finest instruments he ever built. The S-500 was the last generation of those builds. His design included Magnetic Field Design (MFD) pickups to increase output while reducing noise, a duel fulcrum bridge with locking tuners for better tuning stability and vibrato control, and the passive treble and bass (PTB) system for greater shaping control while maintaining volume.
I’ve found the PTB sounds best starting with treble and bass in the mid-range, then season to taste. Turning the volume knob down to about 7 gives it a more vintage sound but the flexibility is enormous and this guitar is happy playing just about any genre.I also love how quiet MFD pickups are, even when playing with high gain. Although the mini-toggle Expander Switch never spoke to me, it adds more variation in pickup combinations that give unique tones with the MFD pickups.
Fullerton-made guitars include premium tone woods, finishes, materials, and precision.
