The PRS Silver Sky brings John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith’s shared vision of the ideal vintage-inspired single-coil guitar to life, blending the warmth and familiarity of prized early-’60s instruments with the precision and refinement of a modern PRS. Developed through years of research and real-world testing, the Silver Sky pairs a solid alder body with a bolt-on maple neck and 7.25"-radius rosewood fingerboard for a familiar, responsive feel, complemented by a smooth satin nitro finish. Three 635JM single-coils deliver a round, full-bodied response with clear, musical highs, while a five-way blade provides the versatile pickup combinations expected from a classic three-single-coil layout. A purpose-designed steel tremolo and vintage-style locking tuners bring modern performance to the vintage-inspired platform. From its distinctive inverted headstock to its carefully refined neck shape, the Silver Sky reflects Mayer and Smith’s attention to the details that shape how a guitar feels, sounds and responds.
Alder Construction Provides a Balanced, Responsive Foundation A solid alder body gives the Silver Sky a balanced tonal foundation with clear definition and an immediate response that complements its trio of single-coil pickups. The flat-top double-cutaway design keeps the familiar proportions of a vintage-inspired platform while incorporating the distinctive contours and details developed specifically for the Silver Sky. A satin nitro finish gives the body a smooth, understated appearance and feel, allowing the clean lines of the design to remain front and center. Together, the alder construction and restrained finish provide a straightforward foundation for the carefully voiced electronics and responsive bolt-on feel that define the instrument.
635JM-R Neck Refines a Vintage-Inspired Playing Feel The Silver Sky’s 635JM-R maple neck was developed through extensive study of vintage instruments and Mayer’s own testing onstage, refining classic proportions for a comfortable, familiar feel. Designed specifically for the rosewood-fingerboard version, the profile features subtly modified shoulders for a rounder feel in the hand. A 25.5" scale and 7.25" fingerboard radius reinforce the vintage-inspired geometry, while 22 frets provide a traditional playing range across the rosewood board. Small PRS bird inlays add a subtle signature detail, and a double-acting truss rod provides convenient adjustment from the front of the headstock.
635JM Single-Coils Deliver Full, Musical Clarity Three 635JM single-coil pickups give the Silver Sky a round, full response designed to retain musical clarity without an overly sharp or brash high end. Their balanced voice brings warmth and body to clean sounds while preserving the articulation and definition that make a three-single-coil platform so responsive to changes in touch and dynamics. A five-way blade provides the familiar range of individual and combined pickup sounds, while one volume and two tone controls offer straightforward shaping from the traditional three-knob layout. The result is a versatile single-coil voice developed to capture the character Mayer values in vintage instruments without simply reproducing the past.
Purpose-Built Hardware Supports Reliable Tuning and Tremolo Performance The Silver Sky’s hardware reflects the same balance of vintage inspiration and modern refinement found throughout the guitar. Its steel tremolo incorporates PRS Gen III knife-edge screws and is set flush against the body in the neutral position, allowing downward pitch movement while increasing contact between the bridge and body. An inverted PRS headstock maintains a more consistent length of string behind the bone nut, while vintage-style tuners add PRS locking functionality for secure stringing and dependable tuning performance. A curved molded-metal jack plate makes cable changes easy, rounding out a hardware package in which familiar elements have been reconsidered around practical performance.
John Mayer’s Vintage-Inspired Vision, Refined With PRS Precision Across a career spanning more than two decades, John Mayer has established himself as one of his generation’s most accomplished guitarists and songwriters, known for his expressive playing, highly developed tonal vocabulary and deep interest in the instruments behind his sound. Developed in collaboration with Paul Reed Smith, the Silver Sky reflects years of studying prized vintage instruments, refining prototypes and testing them onstage to determine what feels and sounds right. The resulting design brings Mayer’s favorite qualities from early-’60s guitars together with carefully considered modern details, from the 635JM pickups and refined neck shape to the purpose-built tremolo and inverted headstock. The PRS Silver Sky Satin brings that shared vision together in a cohesive American-made instrument with the warmth and familiarity of a well-loved vintage guitar and the precision and reliability expected from a modern PRS.
