The Blackstar Series One 100 MK II is a 100-watt, four-channel tube head for metal players who want tight rhythm tones and thick, saturated leads without fizz at the top end. Two patented Blackstar controls shape it: ISF sweeps the tone stack between an American and a British character, and DPR turns the output down from 100 W to 10 W while keeping the power amp in the sound. MIDI channel switching, a level-switchable effects loop and a speaker-emulated output cover the studio and the stage.
Four Channels
The Clean channel's Bright/Warm switch changes both the preamp voicing and the power amp damping: Bright gives a ringing Class A style clean, and Warm gives a looser, Plexi style Class AB tone for warm cleans and crunchy rhythm parts. Super Crunch on the Crunch channel moves from a looser, lower-gain crunch to a tighter, higher-gain rhythm sound. Overdrive 1 and Overdrive 2 are the high-gain channels, and they still clean up as you roll back the guitar's volume. Clean and Crunch share one Bass, Middle, Treble and ISF section, and the two Overdrive channels share another.
DPR, MIDI and Recording
DPR works by controlling the supply voltages to the output tubes and the drive into the power amp, with nothing placed between the output tubes, the output transformer and the speaker. Lower settings also add power amp compression, which is useful for recording, small gigs and practice at home. Each channel can be called up by MIDI Program Change, and the speaker-emulated output feeds a desk or interface on a 1/4-inch jack or balanced XLR, including silent recording with the amp in standby.
