Rare Early Fender Japan JG66B Jaguar – Pre-Catalog Dealer Custom Order

2002–2004 | DK-385 Special Order | Crafted in Japan | 3-Tone Sunburst | Bound Rosewood Fingerboard | Pearloid Block Inlays

■ Overview

Offered here is an exceptionally well-preserved, early-2000s Fender Japan Jaguar JG66B, originally manufactured as a special dealer-order instrument before this distinctive bound-neck and block-inlay specification became part of Fender Japan's regular catalog lineup.

Dating to approximately 2002–2004, this beautiful Japanese-made Jaguar represents a fascinating period in Fender Japan's history, when special dealer-order specifications were produced in limited quantities before some were later introduced as regular production models.

This is not simply an ordinary JG66 Jaguar, nor is it just another example of the later catalog-production JG66B series.

This particular instrument belongs to the earlier special-order period and retains important factory markings that document its distinctive manufacturing background.

The neck carries the DK-385 special-order marking, while the body neck pocket is stamped JG66-85, the designation used for the standard Jaguar model available during that period.

These markings are particularly interesting because they illustrate how Fender Japan used its existing production models as the basis for special dealer-order instruments.

The DK marking is associated with Dyna Gakki and Kanda Shokai, while 385 identifies the corresponding special-order specification.

The guitar also carries the original Crafted in Japan Q-series serial number, Q027684, placing its manufacture within approximately 2002–2004.

At that time, the distinctive bound rosewood fingerboard and pearloid block-inlay configuration had not yet become part of the regular Fender Japan Jaguar catalog lineup.

The special-order production of these instruments preceded the later introduction of similar specifications as standard catalog models.

This makes the guitar especially interesting to collectors who appreciate the development and manufacturing history of Japanese-made Fender instruments.

Even more remarkable is the condition of this particular example.

Despite being more than two decades old, the guitar retains a beautifully glossy 3-Tone Sunburst finish, an exceptionally clean bound rosewood fingerboard, and frets showing very little visible wear.

With its distinctive early production history, desirable late-1960s-inspired specifications, and outstanding preservation, this is a particularly attractive example of a Japanese-made Fender Jaguar.

Carefully inspected, maintained, and prepared for its next owner by The Sound Shop SUZUKI in Niigata, Japan.

■ A Rare Pre-Catalog Dealer Custom Order

One of the most fascinating aspects of this Jaguar is its manufacturing history.

During the early 2000s, Fender Japan produced special dealer-order instruments alongside its regular catalog models.

These instruments often featured combinations of specifications that were not available through the standard production lineup.

Some of these special-order configurations subsequently became part of the regular Fender Japan catalog.

The bound-neck Jaguar is an especially interesting example of this development.

In Fender Japan's 2002–2004 catalogs, the regular Jaguar lineup featured the JG66-85, a more conventional model with dot position markers.

The distinctive bound rosewood fingerboard and pearloid block inlays found on this guitar were not part of that standard catalog specification.

However, these features later appeared on the JG66B series, including the JG66B-110.

This particular guitar was manufactured during the earlier period, before that specification became established in the regular catalog lineup.

The factory markings provide further insight into its special-order origins.

The body neck pocket is stamped:

JG66-85

The neck carries the separate marking:

DK-385

The JG66-85 stamp identifies the standard Jaguar production model used as the basis for the instrument.

The DK-385 marking identifies the special-order specification associated with the Dyna Gakki / Kanda Shokai production system.

These markings reflect the manufacturing process through which Fender Japan produced special-order guitars using established production platforms combined with distinctive custom specifications.

Rather than being an ordinary JG66-85 modified by a later owner, this instrument was manufactured with its bound-neck and block-inlay configuration as part of the original special-order production.

The combination of the early Q-series serial number, the factory markings, and the distinctive neck specification makes this an especially interesting example.

Later catalog-production JG66B instruments are already relatively uncommon compared with standard dot-inlay Jaguars.

Examples from the earlier special-order period are of particular interest because of their historical position in the development of the model.

Finding an early dealer-order example in such beautifully preserved condition is particularly difficult.

For serious Fender Japan enthusiasts and collectors, this instrument offers not only the desirable appearance and sound of a classic Jaguar, but also an interesting piece of Japanese guitar manufacturing history.

■ Beautifully Preserved 3-Tone Sunburst Finish

One of the most immediately impressive aspects of this guitar is its outstanding cosmetic condition.

Despite being manufactured more than 20 years ago, the instrument has been remarkably well preserved.

The original 3-Tone Sunburst finish retains a beautiful, deep gloss.

The warm amber center gradually transitions into rich reddish-brown and dark outer shading, creating the timeless appearance associated with classic 1960s Fender instruments.

The front of the body presents exceptionally well, with very little visible wear.

The back is equally attractive, retaining its glossy finish without the extensive buckle rash or heavy wear often found on guitars of this age.

There are some small surface scratches, minor handling marks, and a few localized cosmetic imperfections, including a small mark near the body edge.

However, these are relatively minor considering the guitar's age.

The chrome hardware remains very attractive, and the tortoiseshell pickguard complements the Sunburst finish beautifully.

Overall, this guitar has a particularly clean and elegant appearance.

It is increasingly difficult to find an early-2000s Japanese Fender Jaguar that combines such distinctive specifications with this level of preservation.

■ Bound Rosewood Fingerboard & Pearloid Block Inlays

The bound rosewood fingerboard is one of the defining features of this special-order Jaguar.

Unlike the more commonly encountered JG66 models with traditional dot position markers, this instrument features beautiful pearloid block inlays surrounded by cream-colored fingerboard binding.

This specification was inspired by the more elaborate Jaguar designs introduced during Fender's CBS-era production in the mid-to-late 1960s.

The combination of dark rosewood, bright pearloid blocks, and cream binding gives the guitar an elegant, sophisticated appearance.

It also creates a striking visual contrast with the 3-Tone Sunburst body and tortoiseshell pickguard.

The maple neck displays attractive natural wood grain and retains its original finish.

The rosewood fingerboard is exceptionally clean, with very little visible evidence of heavy use.

The frets also show extremely little wear, which is especially impressive considering the age of the guitar.

These details make the instrument particularly appealing to players and collectors who value both originality and condition.

■ Classic Fender Jaguar Tone & Character

This guitar retains the distinctive pickup configuration and switching system associated with the classic Fender Jaguar.

Equipped with two Jaguar-style single-coil pickups, it offers the bright, articulate response and unmistakable tonal character that have made the Jaguar a favorite among generations of guitarists.

The Jaguar's 24-inch short scale provides a different playing feel from the more familiar 25.5-inch scale used on Stratocasters and Telecasters.

The shorter scale contributes to a comfortable string tension and a responsive playing experience.

The bridge pickup offers a lively, cutting sound with excellent attack and note definition.

It is particularly effective for surf rock, garage rock, indie rock, alternative rock, and other styles requiring clarity and presence.

The neck pickup delivers a fuller, warmer character while retaining the distinctive clarity of a Jaguar single-coil.

The traditional lead circuit allows the player to select different pickup combinations and access the characteristic bright Jaguar sound.

The separate rhythm circuit provides an additional, darker tonal option, particularly suitable for warm rhythm playing and mellow musical passages.

The floating tremolo system adds expressive vibrato and contributes to the guitar's distinctive playing response.

The combination of a short scale, bright single-coil pickups, floating tremolo, and traditional Jaguar switching gives this instrument a character quite different from an ordinary Stratocaster or Telecaster.

It is an excellent choice for musicians seeking the distinctive sound and playing feel of a vintage-style Fender offset guitar.

■ Japanese Craftsmanship – The Crafted in Japan Era

This Jaguar was manufactured during the early-2000s Crafted in Japan period.

During this era, Fender Japan production was closely associated with Dyna Gakki and Kanda Shokai.

Japanese-made Fender instruments from this period are appreciated for their consistent craftsmanship, attractive finishes, and careful attention to traditional Fender designs.

This special-order Jaguar is a particularly interesting example of that manufacturing era.

Its bound-neck construction, pearloid block inlays, beautiful Sunburst finish, and distinctive factory markings reflect the flexibility of Fender Japan's production system at the time.

The guitar also demonstrates how dealer-requested specifications could contribute to the development of later regular-production models.

For collectors interested in Japanese Fender history, this special-order background provides an additional attraction beyond the instrument's appearance and sound.

■ Condition

This guitar is in exceptionally good cosmetic condition for its age.

The original 3-Tone Sunburst finish retains a beautiful gloss across both the front and back of the body.

There are only minor signs of careful use, including some small surface scratches, light handling marks, and a few localized cosmetic imperfections.

The body does not show the extensive finish wear or heavy buckle rash commonly found on instruments of this age.

The maple neck is also in very attractive condition, with its original finish and natural wood grain clearly visible.

The bound rosewood fingerboard is particularly well preserved.

The pearloid block inlays and cream binding remain very attractive.

The frets show very little visible wear.

The metal hardware has been carefully cleaned and retains an attractive appearance, with only minor age-related signs of use.

The guitar has been thoroughly inspected and adjusted for comfortable playability.

The strap buttons have been replaced with locking-style buttons.

The included tremolo arm is a compatible replacement rather than the original factory arm.

Apart from these changes, no other modifications were identified during our inspection.

Overall, this is a remarkably clean example of an early-2000s Fender Japan Jaguar.

Its condition is particularly impressive when considered together with its early special-order manufacturing history.

Please examine all photographs carefully for a detailed view of the condition.
