I am offering a Martin 000-17 Whiskey Sunset from 2023, a handcrafted in Nazareth, PA (USA), all solid timber acoustic guitar featuring a compact 000 body design with neck-to-body joint at the 14th fret, fine Sitka spruce top over Scalloped X bracing, back and sides made of solid mahogany, glued selected hardwood neck with Modified Low Oval neck profile and 44.5mm bone nut, premium rosewood fingerboard with 1955 Style 18 mother-of-pearl dot inlays, open Golden Age Relic nickel tuners, short 632mm scale length, as well as rosewood bridge with bone saddle and high-quality L.R. Baggs M80 soundhole pickup (upgrade!) in a beautifully executed Whiskey Sunset Satin finish with faux tortoise pickguard and Antique White bindings in mint condition, including Martin softcase, manufacturer’s paperwork, and professional setup with 12-53 Elixir 80/20 strings.
Crafted at the historic Nazareth, US, factory, this Martin 000-17 combines the time-honored construction of the American acoustic guitar legend with a deliberately understated vintage aesthetic. Martin’s 000 body shape has been one of the most popular smaller acoustic guitar body styles for over a century, offering an excellent balance between playing comfort, projection, and tonal balance. The 17 Series embraces this traditional approach with select all-solid tonewoods, understated features, and a characteristic satin finish.
Sonically, the combination of a solid Sitka spruce top and solid mahogany body delivers a wonderfully direct and balanced tone. The spruce top provides dynamics, definition, and ample headroom, while mahogany complements the tone with warm, focused mids and a dry, clearly defined bass foundation. The scalloped X-bracing allows the top to respond freely and gives the comparatively compact 000 a surprising amount of volume and projection. Fingerstyle, blues, folk, and singer-songwriter accompaniment in particular benefit from the excellent string separation and immediate response.
The short 632mm scale length ensures pleasantly relaxed string tension and makes bends and extended chord work exceptionally comfortable. Added to this is Martin’s proven Modified Low Oval neck profile, which, together with the 44.5mm-wide bone nut, caters to both pick players and fingerpickers. The rosewood fingerboard, with its subtle 1955 Style 18 mother-of-pearl dot inlays, underscores the traditional character and offers a pleasantly natural playing feel.
A sound sample of this model can be found above at the end of the photo gallery.
The professionally upgraded L.R. Baggs M80 soundhole pickup combines a magnetic string pickup with a sensor detecting the body vibrations, thereby enabling a particularly dynamic and natural amplified acoustic sound. The M80 can be operated in either active or passive mode, making the 000-17 an excellent instrument for the stage without requiring any unnecessary structural or visual modifications to the guitar.
Visually, this 000-17, with its Whiskey Sunset finish, possesses a distinctly unique vintage character. The warm color gradient harmonizes beautifully with the satin-matte nitrocellulose finish, the faux tortoise pickguard, and the subtle Antique White bindings. The open-back Golden Age Relic nickel tuners complete the deliberately traditional look, making the guitar appear as if it were an instrument from a bygone era, without sacrificing the precision and reliability of a modern Martin.
