Ampeg M-12 Mercury - Navy Random Flair (1958/59)
Made in USA (Woodside, NY)
This 1958/59 Ampeg M-12 Mercury is the top model of Ampeg's first popular-priced line, and it's a two-channel tube combo with real tremolo and a big, warm, touch-sensitive voice. Channel 1 and channel 2 each have their own volume and tone, and the shared speed and intensity controls give you deep, swampy vibrato that you can switch on and off with the original tremolo footswitch. The navy flair tolex, now aged to a dark blue-gray, and the gray swirl-pattern grille cloth are the correct look for the period. Ampeg used that swirl grille only from mid-1958 until 1962, when it switched to Blue Check covering with a plain gray grille. The chrome control plate is also hard to find in this condition, with the silkscreened lettering still clean and legible. The original Jensen 12" speaker is dated to late 1958. It works great, and the power cord was updated with a grounded 3-prong cord for safe use. The original 2-prong cord is included, so you can go back to stock if you want.
