Jeff Beck was a pioneering British guitarist whose explosive technique, volume-knob swells and whammy-bar work defined decades of blues-rock and fusion. In the Yardbirds (1965–66) he played a modified 1954 Fender Esquire through Vox AC30s with a Sola Sound Tone Bender MK I, producing the sitar-like fuzz and feedback of Heart Full of Soul and Shapes of Things. He then switched to a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard and Marshall 1959 Super Lead stacks for the heavier Jeff Beck Group sound on Truth and Beck-Ola.
Beck’s 1970s fusion period featured the Oxblood 1954 Les Paul on Blow by Blow before he moved to Jackson Soloists in the mid-1980s. From 1991 the Fender Jeff Beck Stratocaster (thick neck, later noiseless pickups and LSR roller nut) became his main guitar. On his final 2022 tours he used Custom Shop Strats into Magnatone Super Fifty-Nine heads and vintage Marshall JMP Super Leads, typically with a J. Rockett Archer overdrive and Dunlop Echoplex delay, though his tone always came more from touch and the guitar volume knob than from pedals.
