Metal Megadeth Dave Mustaine

Dave Mustaine founded Megadeth after leaving Metallica and built thrash guitar around tight down-picked riffs, a 24-fret V silhouette, and Marshall crunch. From 1986 into the early 2000s his main guitar was the Jackson King V (customs first, then the KV Pro / KV1 production signatures) with Seymour Duncan JB-style humbuckers, most famously the King V used on Peace Sells, Rust in Peace, and Countdown to Extinction. Those records were cut through Marshall JCM800 2203 heads, the tight English stack that still sits in his studio today.

After a short ESP run (DV8 / Axxion, 2003–06) he spent 2007–2021 on the Dean VMNT V and the Explorer-shaped Dean Zero, with Marshall JVM410H heads and Marshall 1960DM 4x12s on the road. In 2021 he left Dean for Gibson. He now records and tours with the Gibson Dave Mustaine Flying V EXP (25.5" scale, 24 frets, Explorer headstock, Seymour Duncan Thrash Factor pickups) plus Kramer Vanguard and Epiphone Flying V signatures. Live tone is a Neural DSP Quad Cortex into a Seymour Duncan PowerStage 700; the studio still uses a Marshall JCM800, a JVM410HJS, and 1960DM cabs.
