πŸ“ About This Listing

A vintage model similar produced by Carroll Sound in the 1960s. It is a percussion instrument composed of a series of graduated brass bells nested on a rod within a wooden frame

  • It consists of a graduated series of 27 brass bells mounted on a central rod. While the image shows it positioned horizontally, this instrument is traditionally displayed and played vertically on its wooden stand.
  • Function: It is a percussion instrument often used for glissando effects, similar to wind chimes, by sliding a metal striker up or down the stack of bells. It can also be played chromatically by striking individual bells.
  • Cultural Context: This type of instrument, sometimes called a "Chinese bell tree," gained popularity in rock, folk, jazz, and pop music during the 1960s.
  • Historical Note: Carroll Sound was a prominent producer of these instruments until the company closed in the 1980s, after which other manufacturers like LP (Latin Percussion) and Meinl began offering similar versions
