Model Background

In early 1965, Gibson’s Firebird line transitioned from the original reverse-body and banjo tuner design to what became known as the non-reverse Firebird. During this period, a rare flat headstock variant emerged, nicknamed the “Platypus” for its distinctive bill-like appearance.

The Firebird Platypus reissue captures the essence of that rare design while incorporating modern refinements. The updated Platypus headstock provides straight string pull for improved tuning stability, while its historically accurate mini-humbuckers deliver the trademark Firebird chime and bite — from sparkling cleans to snarling rock and blues tones.
