There are ES-335s, and then there are the guitars from Gibson's Memphis era. Built in 2016 at Gibson's dedicated Memphis facility, this Limited Edition ES-335 Satin takes one of the most iconic electric guitar designs ever made and gives it a beautifully stripped-back, vintage-inspired treatment. The Sunset Burst satin nitro finish is the star visually, with a warm amber centre transitioning through deep red into almost-black edges, while the thinner satin treatment lets the character of the maple show through without the overly polished look of a traditional gloss 335.
Underneath, it's everything you want from a proper ES-335: classic semi-hollow construction with a solid maple centre block, a mahogany neck, bound rosewood fingerboard with small-block inlays, and a pair of PAF-inspired Burstbucker humbuckers. Gibson also gave these 2016 Memphis models some particularly thoughtful appointments, including a tubeless Historic truss rod, rolled neck binding, a bone nut, Grover Milk Bottle Rotomatics, a locking stopbar and an ABR-1-style bridge with titanium saddles.
It's a fantastic example of what made the Memphis-built ES guitars so loved: unmistakably traditional, but with enough subtle refinement to make it an incredibly usable everyday instrument. And with the Limited Edition Sunset Burst Satin finish, this one has a look and feel that stands apart from the endless sea of standard Cherry and Vintage Burst 335s.
