An early example of one of Fender’s most important artist signature models, this 1989 Eric Clapton Stratocaster comes from the first year of production and is finished in the unmistakable Torino Red .
The Eric Clapton Strat was designed around the feel and response Clapton wanted from his own instruments, combining a traditional Strat platform with a much more flexible electronic setup. Alongside the three single-coil pickups, you get Fender’s active mid-boost circuit and TBX tone control .
The mid-boost allows you to take the guitar from classic Strat clarity and sparkle into a much thicker, more vocal sound with considerably more push. The TBX control adds another layer of tonal shaping , letting you fine-tune the guitar’s brightness and response beyond what you get from a conventional Strat tone circuit.
The neck is another defining part of the model. Its comfortable soft-V profile gives the guitar a distinctly vintage-inspired feel, while the blocked tremolo setup reflects Clapton’s preference for the stability and direct response of a hardtail-style Strat.
What makes this particular guitar especially interesting is its 1989 Serial Number but a 1991 Neck Stamp. These early Clapton Strats represent the beginning of a signature model that would go on to become one of Fender’s longest-running artist instruments. Combined with the Torino Red finish, it makes for a particularly attractive example for both players and collectors.
