Orange Brand Beginnings
Orange Amplification was founded in 1968 by Cliff Cooper in London, initially focusing on high-wattage tube designs to meet the demands of the British rock scene. The company quickly gained recognition for its bright orange tolex-covered cabinets and reliable performance.
AD200 Development
The AD200 bass head entered production in the early 1970s as part of Orange's push into dedicated bass amplification, featuring a 200-watt output stage and a preamp voiced for electric bass. Later MKII and MKIII revisions refined the power supply and added features while retaining the core circuit topology.
Notable Users
Bassists such as John Myung of Dream Theater and various session players adopted the AD200 for its ability to cut through dense mixes without additional processing. Its presence in 1970s and 1980s rock tours helped cement its reputation among players needing consistent, high-output tone.
