Boss and Roland Origins
Boss emerged in 1977 as a division of Roland Corporation to produce durable, affordable effects pedals for working musicians. The company quickly became known for rugged construction and consistent analog-to-digital performance.
DD Series Development
The DD line began with the DD-2 in 1983, one of the first compact digital delays available in pedal format. Successive models added longer delay times, more modes, and features such as stereo I/O; the DD-7 arrived in 2008 as the direct successor to the DD-6, extending maximum delay to 6.4 seconds and introducing a dedicated reverse mode.
Notable Artists and Usage
Artists including Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead and Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine have used Boss digital delays to craft layered, modulated textures. The DD-7 remains popular for both straightforward slapback and complex looping applications.
